X-Plane vs Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 Each Has Pros & Cons
If you want to spend an evening flying a sim, X-Plane is the way to go. If you want to spend an evening configuring a flight sim then Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is the way to go. I'm in over $600 trying to get this sim to work. First getting charged twice by Steam for the upgrade to The Premium Deluxe Edition just to get a Steam dial version of a Cessna 172. That's what I fly IRL and wanted it for practice purposes. Steam won't refund me for the double charge. That's $200 that the Premium Deluxe Edition cost me because Steam charged me twice because of a "Failed" purchase. Ok. Then there's $400 for compatible joysticks to even attempt to fly Flight Simulator & ultimately I have to use a combination of rudder pedals, joysticks and throttle controllers from different manufacturers just to fly without throttle control inexplicably dropping to zero and ground steering issues that are absurd. NO I DON'T have double bindings that conflict with one another when I use control devices from the same manufacturer. For a year and a half Microsoft shows us beautiful clips of this product, likely run on an IMB Watson, only to have major issues with it's release / use. I had a decent control configuration before the version 7 release the other day now I'm back to configuring square 1. I really want to like this sim as I believe it has a lot to offer, now in it's current state after major control configuring and going forward, so forgive me for being cynical because of all the issues I've had with this product. My intent is not to offend anyone here on the forum, but to impart the frustration I've experienced so far. I'm sure rational flight sim users can see my point of view.

Thanks Everyone For Listening.

XP has it's fair share of big issues. If you want a very good experience with XP you do have to dive into addons. I for one am super excited for the Airfoillabs 172 NG releasing tomorrow but that doesn't mean I don't think MSFS isn't a good sim. Does it have issues? Yes, lol.

I don't think of MSFS being bad either.
But once it comes to realistic physics and game stability I thing as for now x-plane is the better choice.
MSFS might be the future, but I think it's still too young and has too many issues at current state.

I would personally only recommend XP11 currently because it's on sale, not because of it's better physics or stability. I'm currently flying the SimCoders 172 with a hardware Cessna yoke, rudder pedals and throttle quadrant. It's much, much better than the stock 172 of which it overhauls. In MSFS I enjoy flying the JPLogistics 152 which overhauls the stock 152. It's fair to think that MSFS is lacking in some areas when it comes to physics but this is also true in XP11. Does it ruin my fun? Nah, not really. If one really doesn't want to deal with MSFS then they should wait for XP12.

"Steam won't refund me for the double charge"

Microsoft should authorize Steam to refund the double charge. I know because it's happened to me twice. There are many posts on this subject.

Granted, we shouldn't have to research things like this and all the other issues. It shouldn't be that way but that's the reality of triple A gaming these days.

I have spent more time to tinkering XP11 than MSFS. I had to make own sceneries on both, but XP11 there is more addons which you must try to get best. But in the end, XP11 do not looks crap. Both have uses so I fly with both. Flight sims needs configuring and attention.

I bought my MSFS from MS store and I have not problems with that. Latest update was hard to VR so now I have used more XPlane. Both sims have own drawbacks.

I'm assuming you've never flown during dusk where shadows get really weird.

I'd say X Plane looks dated, which is to be expected. For its intended users it seems the graphics are more than adequate in the same way iRacing's graphics work fine for its users. And like iRacing, I think XP devs potato a lot of features to keep framerate up. Curious if XP12 will try to compete with the look of MFS20 and require a 3090. We'll see.

Yeah, I mean, discussing something being treated over and over again, as stated in a simple forum search. Amirite ?

I spend every morning configuring my flight sim. My success rate using GA with this sim is about one successful completed flight out of every 5 attempts. Usually it takes me about three-six hours every day messing with stuff on XP11 just to get a flight off the ground, because with all the variables involved with an airline flight, one of the add-ons is bound to break, wrecking my flight. MSFS is great for GA but total crap for airline flights. Many times my frame rates are crap, so I just close the sim. The next day the frame rates are in the triple-digits. The next they are back in the gutter. There's not must consistency with sim performance for some reason with MSFS2020.

I guess I'm part of the normally silent majority. I really can't say I've had many problems with this sim, other than the odd annoying new bug, but that happens with all serious flight sims that get updated, and this one is early in its life.
I'm using a really modest PC that's now 7 years old, Oculus Rift S, Cougar MFDs, UFC, motion platform, buttkicker. I stick to GA, C172, TBM etc, so I'm not pushing the limits.

Yesterday I flew a low level trip through the English Lake District in the the C172 with VR, I was amazed how well the low level turbulence was modelled as I crossed each ridge, the motion platform was really bouncing me up and down. It's an area I've flown many times in my military helicopter flying so I know how bumpy it is in real life.

So if I'm understanding this correctly - and I'd like to think I am - you don't approve of certain posts. And you then click on those posts.

This is going to sound crazy, but hear me out. Perhaps you could - and again, I'm just brainstorming here - perhaps you could not click on posts that don't interest you?

I don't know, I like to think outside the box. It's worth a try. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You cant compare the 2 until 12 comes out. Your comparing last gen sim to a next gen sim. Now when 12 comes out with all its little eye candy goodies round trees, water, clouds...then you can have a valid comparison.

But in the meantime my $$$ is on 12.... Having to rely on the internet just to have your sim run ... well that sooooo 1960's IMHO

If you don't mind a bit outdated graphics but want a REAL simulator which actually works without having big issues definetely go with X-plane.
In terms of flying physics and realism X-plane beats MSFS by far.

If you're more interested in realistic graphics and don't mind your mental health draining after each update go with MSFS

If you're letting it get to you that bad, then you really should let it go and play something else instead.
