I think that the extra planes are nice.
I bought it just for the 787 and I love it!
The moment the A2A Aerostar comes out is the moment I'm done with stock aircraft, I will fly it till the next study level aircraft comes out. The money I don't spend on the Premium Deluxe and put aside for the Aerostar is definitely worth it to me. I'll take one study level aircraft over a bunch of ones that aren't and handcrafted airports any day of the week. I don't think I will ever visit those airports.
We've already seen that the handcrafted airports aren't as detailed as some third-party airports (take a look at Flightbeam Denver, it's more detailed than the handcrafted Denver in the Premium Deluxe). For $15 it definitely looks worth it.
However, if you are intent on being a true student of aviation, then the extra packages aren't worth it. You will want to hold out for the study level aircraft: A2A in particular, and PMDG if you don't mind buying all new hardware when it comes out.
Flight sim can be very expensive. STEAM has sales, though. This time next year there ought to be some discounts, and as time goes on the base game will be cheaper. I believe I bought FSX-SE on STEAM for ten bucks.
