Report a translation problem
I have not been bringing my throttle back for cruise and my mixture is at about 24%.
I am a novice with little knowledge about the mixture/fuel tank stuff.

I think it starts out using the left tank and if fly a long time you might notice your plane trying to lean right a lot because of the weight balance. That's likely your problem.

It looks like he already had his mixture leaned and being a novice I'm guessing he probably has it set to auto-lean. I usually lean by sound and watching my exhaust gas meter and if the OP sticks with it I expect he will eventually learn all the tricks.
Yes, they did but who knows if it was set too rich or lean. If you want to keep it simple you're right about sound. Simple set cruise power then lean the engine till it runs rough and then enrichen it till it stops running rough. You can get fancy with EGT and CHT gauges if you want though.
