mid-flight a bit boring?
I'm a complete flight noob but it seems most time between taking off and landing you pretty much just set autopilot on and do nothing? Yeah it's relaxing and you can enjoy the view but other than that it's a bit uneventful. Is that how it is in real life?

Welcome to the reason why so many pilots end up doing stimulants (legal or illegal) because commercial flying from point A to B is 99% boring but you have to stay alert the entire time.

I think a general chat ingame or a ingame 'teamspeak' can handy for some. For now I just fly for 45 - 60 minutes. No autopilot. Just me. Doing bit trimming. Doing bit sightseeing. IFR, VFR. Not VOR cause it's buggy or so. FS2020 should been released around Christmas or so. Or next summer.

Real pilots in an airliner just take naps or gaming on their Ipad or so.

You bought a SIMULATOR, smarty. Actual flight is tedious once you get used to the pretty views, and the tension of takeoff/landing.

You got it. For more action, take shorter flights. Try Bush Trips, you might find them more appealing

Novelty will wear off of anything no matter how awesome it may seem
If you love what you do you'll never work a day in your live

A bit, but the sim never has failures. At cruise you will have checks every xxx minutes. Like checking your fuel etc (fuel leaks happen, excessive engine fuel use etc), listening for noises, vibrations. But yes, pilots work loads are higher the closer you are to ground.

Try IL-2 Battle of Moscow or any of it's variants if you like ww2 fighters/light and medium bombers. There's sp campaigns available, as well as a small mp community. It's incredible in VR. I've got several hundred hours on it.

Yes that is how it is in real life but you're talking to ATC and you have someone else in the flight deck with you to talk to.

Fly in more interesting locations and make more eventful flight plans. There's a whole damn world out there. If you are bored you have no one to blame but yourself, unless you simply don't enjoy flying, in which case this is not the game / sim for you.

Also turn off every single unrealistic aid and fly as difficult and realistic as possible. Unless you are already a real life pilot or something it will take you months to grasp every plane.

To the OP... OK, you are new to flight sim. I get it. This is a flight sim. Not an air combat game, not a shooter. Between take off and landing, what were you expecting?

1. Sure 2. You don't have to set the autopilot on, you don't have to slavishly go point to point, you can take a nice VFR flight around somewhere you wouldn't normally go and see the sights whilst being in full control the whole way. Land back at the airport you started at. A lot of people want to jump in some big jets and fly halfway around the world but really, unless you have the stomach for 8 hours of not doing a lot, I wouldn't recommend that. Especially not for a newbie.

In FS you can get up and make yourself a cup of tea. There are a lot more distractions available playing the sim than in real life.

If you do want a longer flight that actually has some nice stuff to look at though, I recently flew from tampa to san francisco in the A320 via high altitude airways and that's a surprisingly nice flight, you get to fly over the gulf of mexico and see all the coast, you end up flying over the grand canyon and it's stuff I guess I'd never seen before.

Get war thunder, play simulator mode in tanks mode, you can fly two planes per match, dog fight, drop bombs, it's intense, simulator and fun. You can also spawn in as tanks if u want that, best are the daily sim scenarios that revolver around lower tier tanks / planes, which are WWII btw

Warthunder is an arcade game vaguely dressing up as a simulator. I don't mean this in a bad way it's just what it is.
