Edit: Having said that, I'm sure we will have the honour of being nickel-and-dimed for no end of crafted regions and landmarks over the coming years.
But it doesn't apply to Switzerland or the UK and the rest of Western Europe. High resolution terrain meshes have been available for them for years. Asobo/Microsoft just decided to use low quality meshes in those areas.
Did you compare it with Google Earth, does it look better?
I reckon, some rock formations will never look good, even with the best mesh resolution.
E.g. the red rocks near Sedona, Arizona.
They look awful in the game and not even close to the real thing.
But even the best mesh of the world would tear the textures apart and make them look ugly.
The only way would be, if they were handcrafted.
The rocks of Gibraltar are handcrafted, btw.
I would agree about handcrafting for some places such as Monument Valley.
But the Swiss Alps are so bad it's crass. No handcrafting would be needed to get the shape of the Matterhorn etc correct. I've simmed it on PrepareD and Aerofly with excellent (payware) meshes. And they had the mountain shapes pretty much perfect.
I'll concede though that a good mesh would introduce texture stretching problems in some places, which would need some sort of handcrafting or 3d photogrammetry to fix. But that's no excuse for for the awful Swiss mesh.
I'm just flying over Southampton UK with 3d photogrammetry and right now I'm prepared to forgive them almost anything, it so sweeeet... :)

Half of their in-game loading screens talk about going places to see certain sights so clearly it's an intended part of the game. And it also sells the game to people who aren't hardcore flight simmers, so I'm sure they will put a good amount of time into it :)
