Microsoft Flight Simulator
Swiss Alps shockingly bad
Overall this game is pretty much a masterpiece (when it is working well).

But the Swiss Alps have been let down badly by a low resolution mesh. The Matterhorn looks more like the Splatterhorn. The Eiger, Monch, Jungfrau, Wetterhorn and Breithorn are almost unrecognisable.

To be fair, with previous sims it has usually been necessary to buy a payware DLC to get a decent mesh for the Alps. But now in 2020 I would expect a flagship product, released with such fanfare as this , to make some effort to make an iconic part of the world look decent instead of going cheap on it.

Clearly it is possible, because the Yosemite and Cascades meshes look pretty decent. Switzerland is not the only low quality area. North Wales also has a poor quality mesh.

So, please Asobo/Microsoft, sort out the poor quality meshes, or failing that, someone else please give us payware products to improve them.

I'm too disappointed that most mountain areas are not being corrected, I was hoping they would at least fix Mt Everest, the only decent mountain area I have found is around UKHU airport in Republic of Dagestan
Until Microsoft upgrade their mapping technology, or someone else teams up with Google to make a competing product, we're stuck with some areas of the Earth looking like they were lifted from a N64 game unfortunately.
Edit: Having said that, I'm sure we will have the honour of being nickel-and-dimed for no end of crafted regions and landmarks over the coming years.

Thsat's probably true for large areas of the worlds.

But it doesn't apply to Switzerland or the UK and the rest of Western Europe. High resolution terrain meshes have been available for them for years. Asobo/Microsoft just decided to use low quality meshes in those areas.

I set all graphics settings to ULTRA, just to see the maximum quality not regarding any frame drops and took a flight from Page over the Grand Canyon. I mean, this is the most famous tourist spot of the US and the elevation mesh is just aweful.

Did you compare it with Google Earth, does it look better?

I reckon, some rock formations will never look good, even with the best mesh resolution.
E.g. the red rocks near Sedona, Arizona.
They look awful in the game and not even close to the real thing.
But even the best mesh of the world would tear the textures apart and make them look ugly.

The only way would be, if they were handcrafted.
The rocks of Gibraltar are handcrafted, btw.

I would agree about handcrafting for some places such as Monument Valley.

But the Swiss Alps are so bad it's crass. No handcrafting would be needed to get the shape of the Matterhorn etc correct. I've simmed it on PrepareD and Aerofly with excellent (payware) meshes. And they had the mountain shapes pretty much perfect.

I'll concede though that a good mesh would introduce texture stretching problems in some places, which would need some sort of handcrafting or 3d photogrammetry to fix. But that's no excuse for for the awful Swiss mesh.

I'm just flying over Southampton UK with 3d photogrammetry and right now I'm prepared to forgive them almost anything, it so sweeeet... :)

hah talking about bad, Schiphol airport i mean the runways are bumpy sorry but i know my airport and the runways and believe me they are NOT with bumps in them.... fix this . and this is a hand crafted airport .,....... what a BS

Well I wouldn't even consider buying any other market place areas if I can't even see my house on the map. They need to fix the stretched textures, the areas certainly dont look the same in some places. The only acceptable places are the ones with photogrammetry so far.
lol im sure this is going to be DLC that you have to pay for LMAO

really ?, its not that bad though, here the Eiger should be vertical but its about 80 degreez angle. took me an hour to manual cache the hi rez stuff from interlaken to the eiger... maybe you should try that and maybe streaming issues.

Obviously they cannot hit every single beautiful place in the world on a first pass, every list will miss some things, but natural wonders like the Grand Canyon feel like a big omission, so I'm sure they're aware and the next terrain pass they are working on will hopefully improve them.

Half of their in-game loading screens talk about going places to see certain sights so clearly it's an intended part of the game. And it also sells the game to people who aren't hardcore flight simmers, so I'm sure they will put a good amount of time into it :)
I've flown over quite a few places in the Alps, and have seen no issues. Looks gorgeous!

The Eiger isn't that bad, because it's a relatively simple shape, but it's still not good. Why don't you try out the Matterhorn and the Wetterhorn if you want to see what really bad looks like? Wetterhorn is just out of shot on the left in your Eiger shot.

Really? Give us a screenshot of the Matterhorn. I want to enjoy the gorgeousness.

Give it time, maybe the 3rd party devs will fix it
