It's not about that, MSFS 2020 is not a marketing tool for Bing maps, it's just that they had a need to use this kind of data and you don't give a contract to your competitor when you have a capability in house.

This AI is really rubbish. I don't recognize a single building in my city. There the brown blocks are arranged roughly where the real buildings are.
How cool do you think this game would have been if you had used google maps data and street view data ...

You do when the competitor is 10x better than your in house team, else the customer (rightly) asks you why your in house option is 10x suckier than the competitor.

Dont get me wrong, FS2020 is awesome. But MS didnt even have to bring Google in, they could have directly licensed the raw map data from google and continued all the work in house using their own team, but with the combined mapping data of Bing and google.

*Instead* they opted to use Bing and a Open Source Mapping initiative data freely available online...

Bassically, they chose the cheap option and got cheap results (by comparison to their competitor).

Then they used those cheap results as the basis to build their premiire title of 2020 on... Cant be surprised that people are a bit upset now...

If they didnt want upset customers, they needed to have map data that was 90-95% as up to date and accurate as the same map data most use to commute and travel daily. When Waze or Maps shows stuff that is years newer than the brand new 2020 flight sim, something is wrong...

Not that I'm complaining, blackshark AI does a wonderful job turning the entire world into 3D. Google Earth is simply flat in my area. FS2020 looks lovely

Comparing Google Maps to Bing for Peal harbor, views and details at the Arizona are quite similar and both are very acceptable. When I HIGH cached the area and flew over it, it looked pretty bad with terrible elevations, underwater white "ship" outlines etc.

Same with Chatham, MA i.e Coast Guard Station, LBI etc. I could sort of tell where I was, but lots of generic fill-ins.

This is also true, bird's eye view data on Bing seems to be ignored frequently in FS2020
