SSD or HDD?
So my computer specs are....

Intel i7 8700k

MSI GTX 1070 8gb

32gb ram Corsair vengence LPX

1TB seagate HDD

120gb SSD (Which is basically mainly for my windows 10)

So i noticed a lot will be installing on SSD now as you can see above this would require for me to buy another/bigger SSD if running the game on SSD is ideal.

Basically what i wanted to know was would i have smoother game play installing the game on SSD?

With how much data the game gets it could make an SSD's life span a lot smaller.

If money is tight then why not try it on the HDD first, if it is at 7200rpm.

I have HDDs, SDDs and NVMEs and found that even many games recommended for a SSD can work perfectly fine on a good HDD. That includes sims like PrePar3D and X-Plane maxed out with heavy weight scenery.

Save the money, etc. and look out for a really good deal on a SSD.

HDD should be fine with your specs. But investing in a decent SSD (500MB-1TB) in the future might be a good upgrade. Put your high load games on the SSD, and leave other games for the HD.

I haven't been involved with the testing versions, but I'm going to install on my HDD and sod the initial loading times. I simply can't spare the room on my SSD, and I also fear it might shorten it's lifespan!

I'm sure the loading times will be bearable and once I'm in the sim, I'm hoping it won't matter.

Thanks for the replies everyone has helped me a lot, im trying to not spend no more to be honest as i brought new flight gear at £150, upgraded ram from 16gb to 32gb which was another £64, then the game £60. So £274 already spent.

But i would be happy to invest in a 500gb SSD if it was really going to benefit my game expierence.

Most new SSDs have lifespans that are longer than most humans, so I'm certain that its lifespan won't be decreased in any significant way.

My motherboard is a MSI z370 A pro and only has one slot for SSD thats currently occupied with a wd green 120gb ssd with my windows 10 on it and a few other launchers.

Is it easy enough to transfer it off of there to the HDD? and then install the new SSD then put it back on the new SSD?

Thanks

I as originally on a HDD, but eventually moved it to my SSD because load times were so painful. Beta still crashes a bit, and there are bugs in the sim that require me to go back to the menu then load the flight again.

So it wore me out. I moved it to an SSD and it still is slow...but maybe 2x as fast still. It was about 4+ minutes to load before. It's close to 2 minutes now.

In sim I had no issues with a HDD. A lot of people who never ran it on a HDD say it isn't possible, it will stutter, bad frame drops etc. All misinformation. Even with an SSD the world pops in around you. You may have performance issues no matter your config because the sim challenges your hardware very much. I'm sure it's a lot of internet stuff being part of tthat.

Anyway, you can use an HDD, but I would suggest one of those fast externals for this or upgrading your SSD to say even just 500GB. But you can play the sim on your HDD and see how you feel about that yourself.

For sure, it would allways be optimal, to install to a SDD hard drive. Maybe you will not get the full effect until you upgrade all of the other components of your PC, but still....

Thanks for reply, load times don't bother me too much and is good to hear you had no issues with HDD in the sim which is the most important for me.

You can run the simulator easily using HDD, but here is the thing: run a "stock" simulator is way, waaaaaay different regarding texture loading using a +700gb simulator. Specially if you want to run 2k or above. Once you start install addons (planes, sceneries, effects) you will note a huge lack of performance using HDD vs SSD.

I'll be running it at 1080p on a 144hz monitor not that 144hz will be much use for this lol i recently brought the T16000m hotas.

go for SSD NVMe 500GB should be enough for the FS2020
and in future a new GPU, the rest is already very good for years to come

IF 1080p, don't bother to spend money in ssds unless your simulator is about +600gb in size. You're good for now mate.

Ok mate, cheers
