Let me first start off by saying I did do some further research to educate myself on some of the main differences pros and cons of each storefront. But would like to hear some feedback if possible. Apologies this post is a bit lengthy, but trying to cover some points.
Microsoft Store version:
(MAIN)
- I believe it will be a UWP (being that the files will be encrypted) or basically going by the "Windows rules" so to speak. Why is this bad? Well possibly this means it would be a bit harder to work with / install custom mods right?
I am assuming this right here would probably be the #1 reason why it would be a con if one plans to install custom mods. But with that said, I understand that there is to be the built "in-game" marketplace. Sooo? Is the above still something to worry about if we want more custom content?
- I see some ppl here above stating having issues about download speeds or basically just not being able to access it at all?
In my experience, I have never had a problem with using the Microsoft Store or even with downloads. Ya okay, maybe some were a bit slow...but honestly the still finished and not that big of deal. Pretty rare.
- I have noticed that some games I have both on Steam and the Store have different performance impacts. And I believe it is caused by the Steam overlay. In my experience, I have noticed way much more smoother fps and almost zero stutters with Store versions while the Steam versions give a slight fps stutter. Very hard to notice, but I did do some testing and found that when I disable the Steam overlay, I get better smooth performance. (This is with exact same graphic settings on both storefronts) Idk could just be some random games. Anyone ever messed around with this and noticed any better performance results?
Steam version:
- Being that I am almost sure Flight Sim Steam version is going to to require the Microsoft account login, well doesn't this mean that it still would launch with the UWP system? Do we know if the Steam version will have an accessible EXE file type in the Steam folders? Does anyone know this like with games purchased via Steam such as Gears or Halo MCC? Do those games have their files easy to access and avoiding the UWP system?
- With the above said, it seems just more of a hassle to have to use Steam since the Flight Sim is still regardless going to ask for the "Xbox App" sign-in platform to launch the title. So this means you have to have both Steam and the App open vs just hitting windows key Start & typing "flight sim" and bam easy search result.
- Yes I get that it is much easier to keep track of all games in one place. (I am totally for this and love this) Steam is by far way more intuitive to use vs the Store
Final thoughts:
So with the above said, I guess it boils down to 2 or 3 things to consider the Steam version over the Store version:
- We want our games all in 1 place
- Possibly this faster download speed that Steam gives over the Store
- We want to avoid this UWP system right? For more custom modding support content? That we wouldn't be able to get via "in-game" marketplace? Like using 3rd party sites?
(Although still not sure if the Steam version is still going to have this UWP or not being that it still launches with the Xbox App)
TLDR:
I guess the biggest problem with Store version would be the UWP right? If we want more custom modding support from 3rd parties outside of the "in-game" marketplace?
Does the Steam version provide a more "unlocked" modding experience vs Store?
Any thoughts? I appreciate anyone taking the time to read this and post any feedback, ya I know sorry for long post again, but just trying to cover main points. Thanx!
With Xplane, the main version gets updates first so people can test it, then it gets updated on Steam at a later date
But nobody knows with FS20, that's just how it is now.
I have FSX on Steam and it's fine since I don't do any heavy modding. If you're just casually playing Steam version will be fine.
Ah, okay interesting points! ya that kind of more is what I am starting to think. A lot of this just boils down to "wait and see" with the release date.
Ya the UWP thing I guess is probably the biggest concern. We have no idea how 3rd party modding sites might be implemented that you wouldn't be able to get with the "in-game" marketplace. Anyways cool, thanks for response!
Great to see this is on Steam, if it was MS store exclusive I would pass.
Sony and Microsoft also limit downloads
Same here
Steam works on pretty much everything and you can't break steam that easily!
