Support Specialist > Firebug: Trench Gun
Does anyone find that using the Trench Gun as a SS is much more effective at taking out trash mobs than a Firebug? Now I know it gets the penetration bonus and all but shouldn't it be "better" in the hands of the Firebug?

I seriosly doubt it, the trenchgun is a flame weapon that recieves flame benefits. I am unsure if the trenchgun recieves the benefits from the support class because the support spec tells you it benefits shotguns and nothing else is told. Perhaps you're just better with the support class overall.

It's certainly an interesting question. The firebug gets a cheaper weapon, and does somewhat more damage with it... but the support specialist can add a trenchgun to his load-out just for fun, weight wise. Of course, he doesn't get extra shotgun shells for it, as he does with other weapons... but the penetration is very useful for trash control at the higher levels, on a map with corridors.

You know what? I think you're right. Maybe the trenchgun shouldn't count as a shotgun, in terms of boosted penetration.

Nobody who's actually used the Trenchgun as Support Specialist would actually say this.

Any other SS shotgun would be much more effective then the Trenchgun. The Firebug as said above gets the extra fire damage and shells for it which makes it much more useful to them.

I use it for everything, even on Scrakes, keep my AA12 for the FPs.

Hmm...I actually think it's on par with the stock shotgun. Despite having fewer shells loaded and less ammo for the Trenchgun, the damage seems to be relatively the same and it gets the penetration bonus not to mention a tighter spread as well as the fire damage but I could be wrong on that one.

I know the Firebug gets the extra fire damage, reload, and ammo but if you gave both the SS and the Firebug (assuming both Lv 6) the Trenchgun and a mob of trash to kill, the SS would seem to do the job faster.

The SS would have that penetration bonus with the gun which means they would pierce through the first couple of zeds and hit the ones in the back which pretty much sets the entire mob on fire while the Firebug could only kill the ones in the front and would have to keep unloading more shells if they wanted to set the ones in the back on fire.

So what i'm saying is despite getting the fire damage, ammo, reload buff as a Firebug, it really feels like when taking on a mob you're taking it out chunk by chunk while the SS pretty much tackles them all in one go

It counts as a Shotgun. It gets the penetration bonus in exchange for more afterburn damage.

Actually, the Trenchgun has twice as many pellets (which aren't even that much weaker) in a smaller cone AND a faster reload speed than the standard Shotgun. The only downside to having a Trenchgun when you are a Support is that you have less max ammo and clip ammo.

Plus you don't get the discount on the Trenchgun if you use it as a SS gun, so by the time you do get enough money for it, it would be better, cheaper and more effective to buy a stronger one instead.

I'd much rather use regular shotguns while playing support specialist if it means having more ammo available. Yes, a weapon dealing more damage is nice, but hardly necessary when you're at level 6 and focusing on a specific group of zeds. As support specialist, I can kill everything that is not a scrake or FP with ease, and I'll only bother those two types if the sharpshooters/berserkers can't get the job done themselves.

From the regular old pump shotgun to the combat shotgun or AA12, anything will do just fine when dealing with non-scrake/FP zeds. And with that in mind, I'll take the extra shells over the slightly higher damage.

I also just find it really cool to have a bunch of different weapons available for the firebug perk, besides the standard (but not yet boring, admittedly) flamethrower.

SS is my fav class but i gotta say the trenchgun works better for the firebug because the reload speed and fire damage is way better.
I'd rather stick to the hunting shotgun than the trenchgun *also because of the price at the trader*
I do agree that the damage is quite nice of the trenchgun for taking out multiple zeds from trying to swarm you.

Every time I see this thread, a little part of me dies. I strongly reccomend ceasing and desisting all acts of thread necromancy immediately.

Why? If people want to contribute or give others their opinion on a subject, they can. Is there some law against this?

Furthermore, this discussion was apparently started two weeks ago. Hardly two or five years, is it? All you have to do is not click on the discussion and read new posts if they bother you that much.

Didn't you hear me? It's because a little part of me dies every time I think of someone using the Trenchgun as Support! You wouldn't want my blood on your hands, would you?
