Reload cancelling
I've noticed that the one thing that keeps getting me killed is how all the guns that I've tried take quite a while to reload and you can't seem to cancel the animation. Combine this with auto-reload and it causes me to reload my gun while surrounded while I mash the weapon switch button trying to get another weapon out. Is there a way around this, do some of the weapons reload faster?

Depending on perk choice some weapons become faster to reload as you level up. Commando has a "blanket" faster reload for any weapon used, for example, while a Firebug gets a faster reload for the flame thrower. Almost every weapon with a clip will allow you to switch weapons when you run out, but if you hit fire when empty... that triggers the reload. It takes some practice with each weapon to get a "feel" for when to change before it runs out, and always reload when you get a chance, even for one shot used.

Sharpshooter gives faster reload speed for sharp weapons, firebug for flamethrower, commando for all weapons.
And you can cancel reloading of shotgun, combat shotgun, m32 and lever-action rifle.

And yes, some weapons reload faster than others.

The guns won't auto-reload unless you fire when it is empty. In order to prevent unneeded deaths due to that I learned to manually reload as often as possible. It's a pretty necessary skill in order to do well in the harder difficulties so my advice is to practice that technique.

I'm actually finding that the problem before was that I reloaded too often, now I'm auto-reloading at really bad times so I think I'll stick to reload friendly weapons/classes.

Also a viable option.

You can't reload too often, you can only time your reloads poorly.

So I should reload often... or not? That doesn't make any sense.

You should always reload if you can spare the time, especially with shotguns or low ammo count weapons. I reload in a lot of odd situations but you should aim to reload when you're covered. I'm sorry I don't really know how to explain, and I'm sorry I can't. You'll learn how and when though!

But I can never spare the time, I am always surrounded. I kill some zombies and reload, by the time I am done I am surrounded. I shoot most of them and are forced to reload. By the time I am done that I am even more surrounded. This goes on until I die or the wave ends.

Are you standing still? O.o

Being surrounded is only a problem when you're not with your team. If you're going to camp I suggest finding a good spot, flat ground with normally 2 ways in. Having a single doorway isn't exactly exciting to play.

Well, uh... yeah? This isn't Left 4 Dead, I don't seem to have anywhere to go so I may aswell just stand around and wait for the zombies to come to me, right?

Sure, if you like being surrounded...

I'm almost NEVER standing around in this game.
