Fire Axe vs Katana
For big Zeds

You see, unlike KF2, the KF1 fleshpounds rage when the dps gets too high as opposed to a flat amount of damage. Dodging a fleshpound's attack will also reset its rage timer. So the idea is to hit its face with the fire axe, juke the hit, and repeat until it's dead. It's very inefficient compared to other perks, but it's a safe-ish execution should you find yourself in such a situation.

Katana

You're asking the wrong question. The real question is "Claymore, or Katana + Fire Axe?"

is that I am intrigued by the fact that some experienced players choose the fire ax. I understand that they do it because it stuns the zeds easier
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Depends on your playstyle and skills, but either either will work.

The Katana cannot stun a scrake on HoE without an alt fire back attack to the head ... which you usually cannot get without another player to take agro from you and even then you simply just don't have the time to faff about doing that, Katana for small zeds due to primary attack speed.

Axe, Claymore, Scyth or Dwarves for big zeds, In that order of preferance. either due to cost, weight, slow attack speed or *ahem* gimmick ability that just serves to prolong a take downs which is usually just a nusiance than helpful.

Katana is better than the axe. Axe sucks ♥♥♥♥♥.

The noobs that say axe is better are the same noobs that needed a gun when they play zerker. So I wouldn't listen to them. A true zerker wouldn't need a gun only a melee weapon... That was the trend in KF 1. They all needed a lever action rifle because they didn't know how to dodge a crawler's attack or even a siren's scream. And most of these noobs didn't even know that a machete was sufficient enough to kill a scrake on hard.

And the dude that supposedly answered your question forgot to mention that Fleshpounds rage if you stay in their line of sight too long as well. So if you simply time it and hide every once in a while behind a big enough object they will never rage (buildings, cars, walls, etc). You can also reset a FP's rage status by forcing him to break down a welded door.

And there's plenty of weapons that don't do enough damage to rage a FP (so you don't need an axe that's a uninformed person telling you that). And you can always reset his damage threshold by making him attack you while you dodge it several times in a row.

Also the stun capabilities of weapons depends on the difficutly. Machete was good for hard and below. I think katana is good for suicidal and below. Then you needed a stronger weapon like the claymore, scythe, or dwarf axe for HOE and below.

Katana, Axe, and LAR of course

Katana can stun scrake if you attack from the rear as zerker, also fireaxe offperk (non-zerker) can stun scrake if you attack with alt (mmb) from behind too, both have their uses. For FP, Katana and Axe work, Katana gives you slightly more range but takes longer to kill FP, whilst Axe (alt-fire) does the maximum single hit damage a FP will take without causing a rage, hit him, dodge, wait for 2-3 seconds and hit again, FP reamins calm and is easily dispatched (with a little practice)

As for loadout for zerk, I prefer Katana, Axe, M79 and Flare pistol. Or the classic loadout of Katana, Axe, Lar. Depending on the funds available.

There is a huge difference between being uninformed, and choosing not to bog someone down with irrelevant info, friend. I did consider mentioning the los, but that didn't seem important in the context of executions. The claymore is also another weapon you can safely poke the fp with, hence why I suggested claymore or katana+axe.

So, why do they prefer the Fire Axe instead of the other weapons of Zerk? Is it why the ax animation is faster than the Claymore?

More carry weight and you pull it out after the katana instead of before.

Basically. It's a large zed killer.

People don't use a gun because they suck. People use a gun because it's a lot easier than trying to dodge every single crawler you see. The LAR is cheap and its ammo is cheap, there's not really a reason to not have it unless you're too cheap or too confident that you can dodge 6 crawlers in a tight hallway (yeah, good luck wasting time running back while you could've just grabbed a gun and shot them to death).

That's a big misunderstanding on your part and you should probably stand down a little on that one. The axe boasts one of the highest damages in melee weapons, which automatically means that any weaker weapon will also not rage the fleshpound with one hit. It's basic logic.

Incomplete and incorrect.
