KF2 is running on an average of 2k so it's not "mostly just 1k people during the weekends".
And the answer to that question depends on what you want. Do you want a game that is focused a lot around mechanics, knowing your perk and perfecting it? Then KF1 is your thing. Do you want a more chaotic, action packed and arcade like game that still focuses on mechanics but is more forgiving? Then KF2 is your thing. Both have high entertainment value.
I personally switched to KF2 because I was tired of KF1 and I hardly found any decent games on sui and hoe, mostly just groups of friends hoarding servers. Also, on my return attempt to KF1, I must admit it felt a bit clunky and, well, old.
KF2 is mainly disappointing because it could have been a lot more.
Killing Floor 2 feels more "cinematic" than 1. The graphics are MUCH better, the audio is much better, and it's definitely more atmospheric. Unpredictable enemies mean a tougher challenge however they may seem unfair at points due to this. There's a larger variety of perks however some seem rather redundant or underpowered currently. The maps are designed in a way that there's usually no one perfect spot to hold out, which may be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it.
If you can get both, I'd recommend it. If you HAD to pick between one or the other, it's preference. If you want a game you can play endlessly with other people or alone, go with KF1. If you want a game that has some pretty epic and gory fights with a kick-ass soundtrack, get KF2.
Well, it does have some great tracks, but it also has pretty damn bad ones too. I mean, what the hell made them go with Christian Metal bands and Metalcore? KF1's soundtrack on the other hand is consistently great all the way (provided you don't count the cancerous Christmas/Event tracks, those are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awful and whoever made them should die, along with whoever had the bright idea of event zed reskins!)
I mean, taste in music is subjective, but the general consensus seems to be that most people are pretty happy with Demon Hunter and the like.
