All you had to do was copy TDU2
You had the perfect blueprint, copy all the features, use your improved engine for handling and you would have a licence to print cash. Here I am revisiting months after launch and it's still nothing like a TDU game. Incredible!

They don't have that blueprint and can't copy it, since that game is still owned by Eden Games, not KTRacing or Nacon. All that Nacon has is the name to the franchise, not the the actual previous games. TDU1 & 2 are still proporty of Eden Games. Now technically they perhaps could revive them, but can't call them TDU anymore. Eden Games doesn't have plans to do so, they made that clear in the past, but they still have the desire to make an open world driving game again. Could be their next game, who knows?

Nacon owns the entire Test Drive IP.

Source?

From Atari 2017 financial report:
"future rights to the Test Drive Unlimited license"

No they don't, they got the license to use the name for future versions, you can go to Eden's website and see that they still hold the rights to the previous games. Atari doesn't hold any of the rights anymore, they only sold the name to Nacon (Big Ben at the time), but the IP of TDU1/2 is still with Eden Games.

They do not so would still require to make everything from scratch. Not as simple as copying now.

Since Nacon doesn't own the IP to TDU1 and 2, they would also need to make it substantially differently otherwise it would be a copyright infringement. O, wait, they kind of tried that with TDUSC... didn't work out too well.

Eden Games has talked a couple of times about a new open world driving game they're working on. No details, only mentions here and there. Who know, they might become adventurous again and create a better TDU successor than TDUSC. They've got the expertise to do so.

Some tweets in the past and https://www.edengames.com/ has a little info about it, but it seems like mobile and console only at the moment.

Ideas are generally not copyright-able. Like Titan Quest is basically Diablo 2 but in a different setting, with new mechanics, and improved in everything that needed to be improved.
+1 Just make TDU 2 HD and add new cars and a few new slots in the casino :armystar:
I played like 1700 hours of TDU2, I don't want a recreation of the game lol. Try make your own copy and get away with legal ramifications if you must.
Indeed, if it was like TDU2 and specially not always online ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, I would be a day 1 purchase. But I never understood how they hate money so hard...
