Got a 5800X3D and RX 6950XT and in medium settings I only have ~90fps, dropping to 20-30 and stuterring a lot...
Brief, we have to wait an optimisation patch (At least, if there is one lol)
game has no optimization, that's the issue.
most people here have no idea how to even monitor their hardware usage, but i have monitoring tools open on other monitor, so i can see it all the time.
my GPU never goes over 70% usage, regardless of graphics settings.
yet i get 20-40fps at best, even in 1080p low with FSR on ultra performance, game looks worse than some early 2000s potato, but LAGGING below 40fps.
main issues is that tdusc devs tried replacing RAM with SSD, that was WORST mistake ever!
you can test this yourself, check in task manager how much RAM tdusc uses, it will be below 3gb because they have limited it to 3gb in config file. i raised it to 6gb, but it still won't use more than 2gb.
and then monitor your SSD usage, you can use crystaldiskinfo or whatever this tool was, it will show how much data is being read/written, leave it open while playing and see for yourself.
it will hog a good 5tb (terabytes, that's 5000gb) in a day!
SSD read/write is around 450mb/s, while DDR4 RAM is 19-25gb/s, but even if SSD speeds would be equal to RAM, it would still not work, because of the way computer is connected up.
CPU has direct access to RAM and it's able to do things quickly, not only because of lightning fast read/write, but because of direct access and different method on how computer works.
SSD is storage device, in order to store data and read it, a lot more has to happen, which means game has to do a lot more and it bottlenecks during those operation, which is why players with RTX 4090 are still getting cry-worthy fps.
it isn't about hardware, it's extremely bad programming and non-existing optimization.
and i tell you, this will never change. it's fundemental flaw of the game engine, whoever designed this, should be fired! it isn't practical and it isn't working.
i can name 2 other games that use same method, starfield and dual universe and they BOTH suffer from extreme lag issues! SSD is not meant to be used as RAM!
btw i have idea, but someone with lot of RAM would have to test it!
make RAM drive and copy game files onto RAM drive, then run it from there. anyone with like 64gb or more ram can do it, since game is around 35gb in size.
i think this might actually work, but problem is that your RAM drive will get erased when you shut PC down, maybe there are tools that can backup the content of RAM drive.
i'd be quite interested to know if this would improve performance, but i only have 16gb RAM, so i cant fit entire game on ram drive.
I'm quite suspicious that actually PCI-E 3.0 M.2 is needed for minimal spec, even PCI-E 4.0 M2 because of the intense SSD hogging would top out any SATA SSD even mechanical disks.
If the game freezes and the map renders, your SSD may be damaged. I had the same problem, I replaced the disk and it's fine.
You can check it
watch a video from branch education (i think?) about how RAM and SSD works, you'll understand what i mean.
RAM and SSD are totally different technologies. CPU has direct access to RAM, which makes it possible to do lightning fast processing. SSD is storage unit and even if it had speed of RAM, it still wouldn't help.
think of RAM as open spot parking space for car, where you can just stop on side of the road and you're parked and take off just as fast, but think of SSD as a multi-level parking garage, like the ones they use in Japan, ones that have lifts so you can store like 3-4 cars in "same" spot. it requires time and precision to park a car in complex parking garage.
there's a REASON why RAM exists and this reason is that SSD is not RAM and cannot be used as such.
yes, main reason is because it uses SSD as RAM. starfield and dual universe use similar method and they also have extreme lag issues even on high-end PCs.
whoever made this game engine, needs to be fired.
DO NOT expect a fix, because they'd have to re-write entire game engine and they're not gonna do that. i guarantee you this. in 3 months or less, their sales will drop and they just move onto new project.
that's how game developing works nowdays, they take the money from initial sales and hype, then abandon ship.
Engine used by TDU3 is KT Engine, developped by Kylotonn itself, the French company which developed TDU3. I was not checking how is working this game engine, but, when I see games using this engine and their optimizations 😒...
Hope that this could help solve your Issues as well.
