I actually have this loaded on an arcade cabinet. Still Eff around with it today.
I really miss the club races. In TDU you could form your own club and race against other clubs. Now we are all forced to choose between Streets or Sharps and do isolated "spending challenges" like in a F2P mobile game :(
Man... Remember the days of meeting at the "strip" in Hawaii. 8 lanes (if i remember) of people just showing off their cars, racing motorcycles. Then pulling off into a store to buy a new hat. Running back home slap up that new picture you just took, running to your personalized garage to grab a different car. Car is dirty so heading to the car wash to clean it up before showing it off... Grabbing some of your new found Hawaiian friends and heading to the casino. Man... Remember being new and meeting that one person with the absolute mansion and garage with crazy cars and you just started with your s**t hole? So motivational. Dude invites you into his car to show "its power".... Like I gotta get this car. Fast forward to 2024 and you're basically playing alone all the time.
IN TDU 1&2 even if there wasn't much population at the time it would always seemingly fill your lobby or seamlessly migrate you to another. There was always someone there. In TDUSC you can be completely alone on the map for quite some time before you see 1 person.
what is crazy for those of you who did play the originals, we all probably at one point in time met each other or dragged each other on that very strip. Full circle....
Unique and individual clubs with Club ranks, races and even unique car rewards and more to manage/level. for such an old game it did so many things right even with the limited Hardware and tech I mean FFS we had a 600 Square mile map... 6 0 0 Square miles. What we have now is 30, 30 square miles. Sure the map is good but man after 50+ hours it really starts to feel confined and since there really is nowhere of interest (being interactive POIs such as shops) to drive to its all for nothing really.
Been there, done that, sooo long ago though... but it really started with Test Drive on the Commodore 64, quite similar though. That was the first one I played at my cousin's place, before the amiga. At that time I only had a Commodore 16 and then switched to MSX2 and played Test Drive II on that one.
Philips, who made the MSX back then had a store in our town, since on of their factories was there. We were able to buy with a discount there, so the MSX was much cheaper than a Commodore 64 or Amiga. It got my career started as an engineer and games designer... way back :-) Good times.
Yup, the game does get better the more you play and get the hang of things. Those that have packed in the game before getting to Hypercar level are really missing out on some awesome speed thrills.
Yup, there's plenty to be fixed to make the game more like a Test Drive game. I miss the mini missions from TDU 2 and some of the event types e.g. speed camera, eliminator etc.
Yup, the AI is awful. One of the tasks I've just completed today was a supercar race "Race to the reservoir". I just couldn't win this against the AI, eventually having lost the race over and over again the skill level dropped down to Amateur that finally allowed me a win. Even at that beginner level the AI is very aggressive. Ironically in Horizon 5 I can usually beat Unbeatable in dirt and road events without too much drama.
Ranked racing if you can find someone to race against is a joke. The whole multiplayer system needs a complete overhaul to make it multi region and multi platform. Then cut down the number of races to choose from and maybe make them on the half hour.
