I've got stuck. Need 55 stars, have 52, and no quests available.

I've reached the dragon cave. That "dragon slayer" guy wants me to find the Mayor. The guard in the city who "knows something" needs 55 stars to start a quest, and I have 52. The only available quest I have except that two is the bandits' loot. Which, I thought, should wait until I resolve the dragon issue. Nevertheless, I've checked the dragon cave and the cave entrance locations for any hidden objects - with no results.

I've never got stuck in three previous games, so this is a big surprise for me. Where was I wrong? And what should I do?

Hmm, have you talked to everyone in the city & the outlying areas? I clicked on every person, even if they didn't have any symbol over their head.

I've tried talking to everyone in all locations - no other quests.

If you still have the bandit's loot quest to take care of, then that is probably what you need to gain the stars you need to advance. The bandit's loot is not easy to see, but it is there. I think I remember it being on the screen where the dragon cave is, near the tree with the yellow leaves in the lower right hand part of the screen. The loot is yellowish, too, so it is not very obvious.

Actually, I just remembered that I did the bandit's quest & then went back to town to talk to those guards which is probably why I didn't notice any problem about not having enough stars.
(Hint - make sure you've got a fair amount of gold before talking to them)

Thank you. It was there. And it's really less visible than any other stuff in the game. I have only 80% sight, so I couldn't find it without your hint.

It's not a "real" bug. But yes - the quest item could be a bit more visible.

I'm stuck with the bandits' next quest, which includes having 10 fruit. I've picked all the fruit there was but ate some so don't have 10. No one seems to sell any either.

Do I have to start completely over?

Have you talked to the farmer's wife?

The farmer's wife, as mentioned above, sells crops, which include fruit.
