CYGNI

Visual Noise - The Videogame
I played the first stage and i think this is all i can really stomach...
The game itself doesn't really know what it wants to be. Not quite a twin stick shooter, not quite a classic Shmup but a whole lot of Euro Jank...
And controls akin to a flight sim are also in the mix.
It tries to impress graphically (and often fails due to shader compilation stutters) by throwing everything but the kitchen sink on the screen at once.
It makes for some visual spectacle, sure, but it does not make for a satisfying SHMUP.

If you want some proper Euro Shmup, get yourself Tyrian.
If you want an actual Shmup...go with pretty much anything else...

Strong disagree. Been playing shmups for over 35 years. In a bottemless sea of "been there done that" I'm finding this very unique and enjoyable, and not to mention extremely challenging in arcade mode. The game is extremely fast paced and one hell of a ride. All I will say is good luck with the 1cc in arcade mode as it will be tough :)

It would probably be better off sold for $20 usd but as you can tell lots of effort was put into it. In regards to stutters I'm not having any but I'm also on a 4090.

Also, turning the ship speed all the way up to 6 and using the d-pad to tap micro dodge works wonderfully for some of the late boss bullet patterns. Nothing here feels Euro to me at all and I've played lots of Euros.

Well, agree to disagree then.
I actually requested a refund because i couldn't see myself ever playing this again.
If you like it, more power to you, happy for you.
Personally, probably one of the worst SHMUP's i played in recent years.
But that's the crux with taste i guess.

well... there is some "out of the box thinking" approach needed and some getting over die hard shmupheadness, to really get what they wanted to achive with all the euroshmuppy design-choices it seem to throw at you. i was worried about those things till the last minute before release and also called them out on a daily basis in their own threats in the genre forums. but it really comes all together after a few runs on stage 1 on easy... not because of a grind, like i worried... you need that runs to get the feeling of how it all works together. and they stated exactly this many times, but all i heard was "grind"... also it's hard to explain with words alone, someone at konami seem to got it pretty early and decided to stick with it. well done, konami!

there is a clever risk and reward dynamic to be found in how it all works into another, even the lifebar, even the noncheckpoints and even the on first sight bloaded lookin controller setup as so the long stages. stage 1 feels like a complete run in usual shmups and it's worth sticking in it for a while instead of rushing through all stages.

it's so intense and rewarding when you are at the last boss on stage 1 with no revives left and only 2 shieldbars and the boss on his last 3 percent seeing him uploading his laserbeams.

The game is published by Konami, it's done by KeelWorks, a UK based VFX studio.

Absolutely!
It just happens that CYGNI follows every design decision i don't like in a SHMUP.
If others love it, fantastic!
I most definitely don't :D

anyway, as a finishing word from me... i was in the exact same boat as you and had zero hopes the last days before release.

Then why are you praising Konami for it, not the actual developer?

oops, i'm on my cellphone and accidently answered into the report window 🙈🙊 sry for that
AntiramDSR Aug 6, 2024 @ 3:30am
also i really unloaded a ♥♥♥♥ ton of critics on their developers threat for exact the euroshmup reasons before release again and again... and ignored all their attempts of explaining why this and that. i'm shmup addicted for 40 years and played nearly all of them... euroshmups aside. i totally get where you coming from with your Impressions. anyway... there is no need to convince anyone.

simple, they seem to early got to see that there is something worth to be supported and that's what they did... supporting keelwork. and so did epic with its megagrant program and now they get called out for beeing cheap for this giveaway-week.

on a side note, as soon as i (just like you, it seems) was aware of Keelworks animation-background and lack of knowldege in gamedesign i instantly gave up all hopes. but i was wrong.

tbh... i believe there must have been a time during development when somone from konami with knowledge intervened to flesh some things out. it really is that well worked out that i asked myself how should they even know without any experience.

i'm not saying it's genius work... but there are nuances and details to be found and they just work well together ...if someone wants to see them.

also: since when did it became questionable acknowledging a publisher for sticking and believing to devs and their vision of something.

this and all the callouts (not you) on epic for promoting this game for a weeklong giveaway. we don't need to be fans of epic and there store-♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ but ignoring that they financially supported tue devs, which use their engine, isn't that hard to understand.

but all they do is complain... i know. i also did that :D
