Best Field Layout (version 3)
So I did some thinking and came up with this: https://i.imgur.com/2Gon9Os.png

Any Feedback?

Feedback is this: this would be an absolute pain to harvest, sow, or make look even remotely organized. :(

Why is that? Most of the field is easily harvested with a 3x3 cut. There are no obstacles when walking from north to south and south to north... I surely takes some time to sow.

Edit: If it wasn't clear: Blue = Water paths with "#" being the extenders. Green = harvestable fields.

Each to their own but I prefer straight rows and symmetry ^^

I think you are going too much off of what looks good on paper and not what is actually practical. You are trying to maximize the squares the trenches are watering as if they were higher cost sprinklers, but they are different in this game. Since they cost practically nothing, you want to focus on having a workable field.

This is evident in the few places you have a trench that is only gaining a single tile, you are giving up a farm tile for a trench to gain a single crop tile - which is a net gain of zero so why do it? You can also see this with using both sides of some of those trenches. They will be watered for free but you will still need to stop and use a tool to harvest just three tiles rather than 9 per tool swing if you focused on just the 3 tiles in between trenches.

Essentially, to harvest your 268 it is going to take way more swings that if you had that in lines or rows of 3. Also since it's so irregularly shaped, you aren't just moving down in a line and will be zig zagging all over the place to work it all. It might not seem like much, but the major resource here is time. By this point of fieldwork you actually expend 0 stamina farming and it's all about how long it takes. You have other things to do plus by this point probably want to spend the least amount of time in your field that you can.

Also keep in mind that in the late game, especially if you are farming like this, you probably are using the farming accessories. You will have some pretty short regrow times, and will be harvesting and planting a lot. Having something cleaner and more organized that maximizes tool uses and not squares tiled will really come through better. Speaking of late game, why are we trying to box all of this into the small field? You are gonna have a few sheds kicking around, a granary, love shack, an orchard (there are a LOT of tree species man) plus all of your processing equipment.

It makes more sense to me to use that funky shaped starter field for trees, sheds or other stuff and irrigate large sections of the second field. It definitely feels like that is how the game was setup with just how big that field is, how the irrigation works and with how the profit margins feel. It's fairly easy to grow a serious amount of crops in this game.

That's what I am doing right now, 630 crops with 40 extenders. Obviously, I am not using every single tile my trenches would hit, but I don't care. I could fit an entire column in the center of crops, but I like the path. The whole field is big enough that I am growing plenty, I don't need to maximize every tile.

But if you wanted to....

I've got notes in there about my logic and how you can tile that design to fit the size and spaces you need.

Thanks a lot. You are right. I am hesitating to use the lower field because that would mean a lot of rebuilding :D But It would be cleaner and faster. Maybe I should start working on it. Thanks.

I was also reluctant to move down the first time because the big field is so full of garbage lmfao but it's worth it in the end. I keep my animals in the upper field instead
