The best one I know of is I Was A Teenage Exocolonist. Not a farming sim, more of a unique interactive novel with lots of potential endings.
Almost every Harvest Moon (now called Story of Seasons) game up to Animal Parade (Wii).
After that, for some reason, Japanese fans hated the rival marriage system, so Marvelous removed it.
And very few games of this genre have brought it back.
------
If I'm not mistaken, what the OP is referring to was like Harvest Moon 64, where rivals will eventually marry their destined bachelorette. But it usually takes so long, that if the player wants the lady, they'll win her heart before then.
However, in 64, if the player befriends the rival, it'll speed up the rival marriage.
I like that, cause it's like you're being the guy's wingman, encouraging him to "tell her how you feel".
(Like Gray, when he's close to marrying Popuri, will say in the bar "....Yeah, yeah, I got the feather. I'll do it soon." (Harvest Moon uses a blue feather to propose))
...I really wish they'd bring rival marriages back, to blazes what Japan thinks.
The game kinda has hints it could be done.
Like Jag and Voda seem to have some chemistry.
To be fair, Stardew Valley also had hints it could have been done, but sadly wasn't.
Namely, looking at the Spring Dance pairs (aside from probably Emily and Shane, but they originally weren't romanceable).
I'm kinda hoping for at least some rival marriage, too.
But I'm not holding my breath.
Current games are afraid to even make a non-bisexual bachelor and bachelorette for making them unavaliable to the players. Much less taking that character out of the options at all.
I didn't know this feature was removed due to the japanese audience not liking it. Where do you know this from? I also would love to see it return, first of all it's just weird, that in most games todays you are the only person to get married, but also because of the feel it gives the games (like a previous person already said, it gives the community a more realistic feel as well as it gives you the feel of progression within the game)
but I'm in agreement that the shift was due to players no longer wanting to feel like they were rushed in either the decision making process or in the relationship building process while also managing their farm. when realistically you quickly ended up having plenty of extra time to burn after the first month or so (if not sooner).
i dont think i would mind it coming back.
What about playing as matchmaker, though?
(Such as, hypothetically, the rival marriage is disabled until you're married. Then (maybe because your marriage encouraged the others to "man up") the rivals slowly try out courting, with you encouraging them?)
I mention that, because in Fire Emblem, I actually enjoy doing that with the other characters, besides my character. Half the fun is getting to play matchmaker, encouraging two characters to get close to each other.
To be fair, even in the harvest moon that had those, the deadline was so far and long that people often got bored before the rival marriage even was a possibility.
In Harvest Moon Friends of Mineral Town the rival marriage was, at EARLIEST, year 4. By then you'd already have 2 kids and eveyone in full hearts for lack of what to do.
