Pause Doesn't Pause?

I just downloaded the game last night. I thought it was paused when I had a menu open (because of the little pause symbol on the side) and went and took the dog out but when I came back, and closed the menu it was 6am and my character was exhausted. So I thought maybe it doesn't actually pause. So I googled pause and saw that you pause it with the p key. So later I paused and made dinner but when I came back and unpaused, again it's 6am but my stamina is still where it was when I paused. I wasn't paying attention to the day, so I'm not sure if that changed. Is there really no way to actually pause and have everything just stand still until you come back?

ETA: It looks like the day maybe restarted because I realized I could check progress on something from the journal and it looks like it still has 1 day to finish and I checked and my plants are still watered from the work I did that 'morning' so it's like the day is just starting over.

That's so strange. Both ways of pausing has been working for me.

It should pause no matter if you use p or not unless it's a coop game then you need p to pause it but only the host can. The animals and people seem to keep moving but time shouldn't be passing while in any menus.

Updating my edit. I paused it again while taking a shower and doing a few other things. It restarted at 6am the next day on the calendar (jumping from 6:30pm on Friday to 6am Saturday as soon as I unpaused). Everything I had done earlier on Friday was still done - animals cared for, plants harvested, people talked to, etc - and none of the multi-day tasks advanced.
