If you've got the stealth/combat skills, southern map is great for parts, Junkyard and Checkpoint specifically. Remember to wishlist what you're looking for, open every crate you find and don't get overloaded.
*edit*
NPC bandit base in the southeast part of the southern map is also a great place to look for it, so is the geothermal plant north of that.

Your rarity of mats found are also entirely reliant on your Drifter Rank. The higher your rank (point past the B and A exam test commissions) the higher rarity mats you'll encounter. I searched a barrel that was typically just greens in a lower tier, and it contained a bunch of gen 2 and gen 3 components after I passed the exam.
I think that last part is entirely down to luck or its area specific, you could always find blue and purple weapon materials right off the rip in the testing grounds in the northern map.
As a side note, the blue cradle material crafts sell for more than it costs to craft them, the easiest being the coffin shell to make, its not really the best way to make money but it nets you over 10k in profit if you sell it.
Can confirm, it's kind of annoying getting getting purple items more often now when I'm looking for blues.
