Remember, the most popular mods for Dark Souls and Elden Ring are the ones that make it really hard to be invaded while making it way easier to play coop. People simply don't like fighting other players. Like, die 100 times against the same boss but god forbid another player kills you once.
I think the "are they dangerous" element of the game makes it fun and leans more into that scavenging aspect the game has, especially since its technically post apocalyptic. And I say this as someone who dropped from 280k credits to 23k because I kept getting killed.
However, I'm worried about the longevity of the game. Once you complete all the missions, there's kind of nothing to do but keep scrounging around for materials to build up your base. Once you have everything, what the heck are you supposed to do next? Unless they're adding in a much more expanded story into the game or something, you really are just kinda farming AO crystals while finding your 710th wooden sheet and 659th fusion compound to make like, a slightly better kitchen when its not even clear if it matters beyond cosmetics.
Also, it's pretty ironic to complain that there's nothing to do if the crystals are already mined, and that you're "roaming the world aimlessly", but then shy away from interactions with other players. Bro, the other players are the "something to do". If you find that all the crystals in your area are mined, and then you see another player, guess what? You just found all the crystals. I guarantee you'd have more fun trying to "mine" that other mech than you would standing in front of a crystal node and holding F.
Yeah, I've only had people try to fight me in the Southern Zone and never the North. The closest I've had are when someone shot me near the bandits by the agricultural plant but then spammed "I surrender". I assume they just had a loose trigger finger and thought I was a bandit too. I've had to initiate all my fights (which I handily lost, heh).
I went out of my way to be as antagonistic as possible because, you lose all your progress after this network test so who cares if you lose everything. People DO NOT want to fight you and will only do so if you literally track them down to the ends of the earth and they have no choice but to fight, since it takes like 30 seconds for the return elevator to open. I learned I'm hot garbage at PVP and lose even if I get a sneaky shot in with a beam sniper rifle on someone while they're stuck in the "hello" emote but even then people were surprisingly forgiving.
I don't really get why people hate PVP when its so hard to get anyone to fight you. I think they just hate the idea of it more than anything else, or they had literally one bad experience out of 99 good ones and its all they can think about.
You want a roaming mini-boss? That's called a player with the PvP faction, hunting cradles for sport. Maybe you even team up with some other Asoc members to take them down! That's great content, if you ask me. But it's also dangerous, and I feel like what people really mean is they just want an NPC to beat up on that poses no real threat. People are too afraid to die, because you lose stuff, but it's really not that big of a deal. Even if you lose everything, and have to go back to a jackbox, it's okay. You'll pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get back there.
Honestly, I feel like the best thing you can do is exactly what you're doing: throw yourself into some PvP, die a bunch, and get over the fear of it. Exposure therapy, right? Good on you for getting in there and mixing it up.
I went from 280k credits to only 23k after dying a bunch trying out the PVP. The insurance payouts means that like, you're not REALLY losing out a lot when you die. You mostly just lose the cost of consumables, which is tiny. Its really not that big of a deal and there's way more extreme games out there where deaths lead to waaaaaaay more unforgiving losses.
