People still play games that had no multiplayer from the 90's. Games have had their multiplayer services shut down and people still will play the single player.
A game that offline singleplayer can literally never die.
They don't need to do a shift, they could either pull a tarkov and have a pve variant of the game or where if you if you have anticheat disabled, the server can't be detected, or are banned it shoves you into a local session where you don't interfere with the greater community if there even is one at that point.

Offline singleplayer and user-hostable MP.
In the old times, we where used to host our own gameservers (in CPDs, servers up and running 24x7 you know)... I'm missing old good practices, every day more.
