What's with the red elevators?

I was on a boss floor, wanted to check out the red elevator because it had a memento once and wasn't a trap somehow, it had her palm in it and instantly sent me back to the field? But there was the normal elevator too, I had put a key or two into it, so what's the deal?

It's been in the dev branch for a while, it might be for child end since sometimes not enough keys spawn? Not sure honestly.
