At least a PC version of Rare Replay would solve the fact with Battletoads (NES) and Battletoads Arcade/Super Battletoads, even though titles like Battletoads Double Dragon (whatever version, I suppose they would opt for the NES version because of being the original design, the Double Dragon side would need to be relicensed) and Battletoads in Battlemaniacs would be sorely missed.
I guess we need Rare Replay. I was interested in the NES version, but would have loved to gotten the Arcade and Genesis games as well as Battle Maniacs.
The Mega Drive version of Battletoads Double Dragon, was developed by Rare itself though (it features its trademark "A Rare Production" message from back in the day when booting the game) so maybe that one would be included. Then again, all four known/official versions of Battletoads Double Dragon were developed internally at Rare so maybe it would be mindblowing for them to choose which one to include (maybe the NES one because of being the original design) or rather go with all of them in the same lot.
But in the Gameboy version, I favor the Toads over the Lee Twins. I need to replay it again to find out why. Roper (the misnamed Willy) was made much easier in this version.
And speaking of enemies, aside from Abobo and Linda, most of the Double Dragon enemies were either misnamed or made up and then passed off as Double Dragon characters. So if BTDD ever gets re-released, I wonder what they would do with the enemy names if a digital copy of the instruction manual was included a la Sonic Mega Collection
Tradewest was only the publisher that Rare had for all of the console Battletoads games, being Battletoads Arcade the only one they didn't touch (that one was published by Electronic Arts). They had some sort of exclusive rights because the Battletoads games always had a copyrighted message sort of "Licensed to Tradewest by Rare Coin-it". Those rights are now long expired so Rare/Microsoft doesn't need to partner nobody to get ahold of any Battletoads games, less even the remnants of Tradewest which I thought were in hands of Warner Bros (because back in the day Williams bought them and then Midway got them, which in the end was acquired by Warner Bros) but it seems there's a "new Tradewest" around. Anyway, they are out of this.
The Mega Drive version of Battletoads was actually handled by Sega through a license contract they did with both Rare and Tradewest. The Game Gear version was done the same way. Sega produced both ports and tasked the development to the then infant Arc System Works. The only condition Sega was imposed was that Tradewest would still publish the North American versions of both conversions, the most prolific market for the series then, but Sega still accepted. I don't think Rare even needs to secure anything with Sega to recover those ports as the rights of them have reverted to them. More like Rare simply ignores them because they weren't developed by them. The Mega Drive version of Battletoads Double Dragon is different story though.
