“Expansionist” is a little tricky at the start as well: it’s awesome and I love it, but you can make mistakes with Expansionist start that will hurt you much worse than if you went with Balanced.
Indeed, just to give a little insight into why we have this system: It is to prevent people from restarting the game to get the exact starting location, leaders and options they want. In this way, the game "motivates" you to adapt to every starting situation, which we think provides more interesting decisions.
It is called Terraformer or something similar (Terraforming?). I forget what it gives you but it is ridiculous. If I can find the list on google I will post it.
Plus you nicked it from Slay the Spire, right? :)
Indeed we looked at some other Roguelikes for this, Slay the Spire does it too indeed ^^.
The influence of Terraforming Mars seems pretty clear. Which makes me think of some other really good references in the genre. Aeon’s End does some really smart stuff with the intersection between the art and the mechanics.
I’m hoping that the Technology system will allow me to influence the deck. (“Guys, here’s ten research points. Now find me a card that costs nitrates!”)
