The challenge maps make you unlock the dig sites in their research trees for the missions, unlocks only apply to sandbox everything else is largely fresh on each map.
As for the strong trait think I took the most round about and probably most expensive path on that map, I released 3 acrocanthosaurus. Mostly because I was avoiding what I though was unnecessary research focusing only on unlocking the dino's for sandbox.
As for the fights to unlock T rex, I think it was either a pack of Dilos or one of the Ankylosaur types dinos I had that kept fighting and unlocked that for me.
I used wemod at the end to unlock the cosmetic options could not be stuffed doing hard modes on all the other maps after I did Canada.
