Basic gameplay loop.
1. The maximum number of guests in your park is set by the park's Appeal rating. You get Appeal either by putting down guest attraction buildings (cinemas and the like) or by having dinosaurs in enclosures and making sure those dinosaurs are visible either from Viewing Galleries or Viewing Towers.
2. The actual number of guests that come to your park (out of the maximum set by Appeal) depends on guest comfort. You get guest comfort by making sure that your Accommodation, Restroom and Emergency Shelter coverage are as close to 100% as you can manage.
3. There's a hard cap on guest numbers based on path quality. Upgrade to Wide Paths and this mostly goes away.
4. The more guests in your park, the more money you'll earn from ticket sales. Place amenities near important parts of your park (the dinosaur enclosures) to earn additional money from amenity sales.
Star rating is purely based on income (as the game tells you if you look at your star rating). Total income = ticket sale revenue + amenity revenue.
