When Mitsuda read the script she was his instant favorite too, so he composed her theme even though it wasn't among their planned main themes they wanted to get from him.
As far as I can tell, Resh's ultimate is the clear best (same damage as everything else, on screen party full heal, and delays enemies), with everyone else's coming in after that from a gameplay perspective. As far as coolness factor of the cut scene, I liked Serai's most.
Her portals and abilities are cool looking, she has style, and she's by no means otherwise bad, just she has that one very powerful move that is too good to let me really use her otherwise.
Mostly unrelated late game spoiler:
I also really like the 6th ult since it's pretty much guaranteed to break every lock at once, though that's somewhat of a niche use case, especially by the time you can unlock it.
I love Lufia 2, but "lol."
There's only 4 combos that break 3 different locks without live mana. Seraï is needed for 3/4.
She's part of the money printer.
Then there's Arcane Barrage turn delay *with* good damage.
Even after B'st gets his last weapon upgrade at level 30, she's still above him in phys atk, making her 2nd only to Valere, so #1 slashing type. So if anything is weak to slash or tox and you want cheap solo damage, she's the pick. 2/6 types. This is assuming everyone has Mirth upgrades. Otherwise, Garl is just slightly above her, but can't slash.
Even when I don't want gold, and it's a part of the game where I'm getting the timing reliably so don't care much about turns and locks even with AG, she's still a great general damage machine for bosses or clearing mandatory trash mobs.
Only cost for all this is low HP and slightly lower defenses than the rest of the cast.
And yet, the cast is so well balanced that all characters are almost this good overall and there's not a single ability that I never use.
Honestly the pirates are more interesting that our main characters
What are you laughing at? The statement you quoted is pretty accurate, Valere and Zale have 0 personality. Serai is pretty much either mysterious for mysterious sake, or a helpless hothead, and neither act is very interesting. At least B'st and Garl are endearing.
I'm laughing at the ♥♥♥♥ take. Specifically about Lufia II's Tia and Maxim having more charm and personality than all of SoS' cast in the first five minutes. Lufia II is a stellar game, but it is chalked full of basic assed tropes and cliches. Other than Tia has unrequited love for Maxim, she isn't a character. Maxim is just the destined hero that is always forthright. He is effectively what everyone is complaining about Zale and Valere for.
