Co op assigned characters are WILDLY inconsistent
I'm not sure if this is by design but even if you assign a character to a specific player, there are times where player 1 will start a battle with player 2s assigned character, and vice versa.

I keep on getting assigned valare even though I set player 1 to Zale. Would it be hard to change this? Its very annoying.

Hey everyone! First, thank you for playing and sorry you're having issues with the co-op experience.

The simplest way to put it is that in combat, players take turns picking the next action from the group rather than being locked into one character. It is mandatory that characters can be picked to play in any order since a lot of the combat's strategy revolves around applying the proper skill or damage type to overcome situations.

So, the main reason why we didn't lock the characters to their respective player from outside of combat is so you can still choose which character does the next action, rather than being forced to play your character even when they don't have the skill you happen to need. Another option would have been for the control to keep swapping between players as you browse the party, but this quickly came out as being even more confusing and tedious.

The early experience with only two characters and two players is definitely the big downside of this approach, but this turn-based mechanic also means a P3 can be included even if you have only two playable characters (or even just one), instead of the extra players just sitting around. All players can also contribute to timing hits and blocks no matter who picked the action. Where it truly sings is allowing both players to play all three (and eventually all six) characters by focusing on taking turns to pick the action, rather than taking turns acting with just one character. You're right that there could be a way for P2 to play only one character and P1 to do all the rest, but that would be a negative to a whole other crowd of players, so in the spirit of focusing our efforts on what we felt was the most engaging experience for most people, we designed everything around giving equal agency to all players.

I hope this approach won't hinder your experience too much, and that it can even grow on you!

Cheers!

Yeah. There us sometime seriously wrong with the character assignments. Battle are very frustrating... I hope the devs look into this soon.

Acording to the in game help, each turn characters are assigned randomly on a per turn basis.

I can understand this being the case in singleplayer. But it does not feel good at all in multiplayer. I really hope they take a look at this. It's extremely annoying and jarring

Came here to just find someone talking about this. My girlfriend and I are playing and it REALLY takes away from the experience

Amazing design choice made by devs for the rest of players in coop. No settings between linked / random characters, who needs that, right?

We’ve been playing since my last comment and I’m actually changing my tune on this topic.

We had no idea that we could each do the timed/perfect block for all three characters at the same time. We also didn’t realize in the bottom right it shows the success/fails for the perfect timed actions simultaneously for all characters, creating a friendly sort of competition.

It’s going to take some effort to rewire my brain after years of similar RPGs without this mechanic (and the idea of being assigned or tied to a character), but every attack, spell or whatever is the responsibility of all players…which it turns out, is actually pretty cool.

We’ll see how it goes after more game time!

I can understand turning the feature into a positive. But I still believe its the most annoying and mind numbing thing that only causes confusion, and removes ties to a character. They could even make it a toggle for people who really want to keep it.

I'm not complaining because it is a free update, but it would be nice if this was optional.

I definitely understand! I too think the game should absolutely prioritize the character you’ve selected and do it’s best to give you that character. It seems they went with a different vision where all characters, and all actions, belong to the party as a whole. The perfect timed things “stack” so it’s actually important all players participate on all actions (at least with the harder difficulty settings we’re playing with).

The revelation of the fact that we could actually all do the “perfect” timed stuff for all three characters regardless of whose turn it was definitely surprised me. The first few battles after learning this it felt awkward. We’ve definitely warmed up to it since and have found the frustration has disappeared (with the tweak to our thought process).

This is our first time playing and severe having a blast regardless. Definitely feel the love the devs put in. The coop mode certainly requires a shift in thinking though, as generally I’d love to have ownership of just one character completely. We’ll see how it goes from here!

Same question as yours. It really makes the game experience weird as I am not role playing the character I am assigned.

Dev's Ignored this so I'm just going to assume it's a personal choice. An odd, annoying, and questionable one, but a personal choice nonetheless.

Not sure how hard it would be, but it would be extremely nice to have this be a toggled feature so I can feel connected to my character.

It's totally by design. You can learn more about why we approached it this way in this deep dive on the update:

Did they ever fix this design choice or at least make it optional? I bought this game to play with my girlfriend but if this is a forced feature I don't think either of us would enjoy the game play unfortunately.

Such a bummer I'll try for a refund and leave a negative review. Hopefully they make this optional in the future.

What a petty way to blackmail developers for your personal neuroses.

The entire gameplay design is to involve players in all character mechanics and gameplay.

People like this are why audience reviews and scores and undermined and marginalized.

How is that blackmail? He found out he didn't like it and left a review stating his distaste. He didn't threaten them or force them to do anything.
