how do i open my inventory?

i want to open my inventory but the game never explains how to. I have looked up online and can find anywhere that explains how so this is the best place to ask so how do i open my inventory?

If you have just started playing the game, you won't have access to the inventory straight away. When you do, it would be Y on a controller, TAB on keyboard.
