I agree with your frustration, the game makes very little sense to me, it just seems insanely inconsistent with how the rules are played out and it's literally just a time sink. I work 40 hours a week and when I have to spend over 40 minutes trying to win a board game inside of a video game for some stupid banana sticker after it's all over, it's not even worth my time or effort.
In order so see the true ending - no.
I know I didn't particularly find wheels that hard, just definitely play through them in order. Having the upgrades as you go makes a difference. Also, you can do a lot by just spamming mage like crazy early on, the guaranteed damage is a big deal, and if their wall isn't up, it's stupidly high damage.
Er, the only thing playing Wheels does is unlock more Wheels content. None of the rest of the game is gated behind it.

I agree. Hiding the True Ending behind 60 rainbow chests is the way bigger crime :D
