Right now most people are convinced they're a red herring, but I'm not so sure. They might play a role in NG+. Not willing to check it out myself, one playthrough is enough.
Just want to point out that the devs haven't actually said this, at least as far as anyone can find. There's one person claiming they said something in their press channel in discord, but there's no mention of the hammers whatsoever, and when asked for a source has gone quiet.
Personally I'm on board with the hammers being a joke item making fun of endgame quests that give you overpowered gear when it's no longer needed.
They also don't carry over to NG+, so if NG+ is where they get used they need to be collected again. I'm going a NG+ run right now so we'll see, but I'm not betting on it.
good to know the source might be faulty. that said I have a hard time buying they do absolutely nothing but maybe they do who knows. that said bamboo creek still bothers me. like why is it there just to be a callback to the messener? the other callbacks were actual areas.
Since the "source" claimed "the solution is cryptic", I scoured the crypt earlier today, for hours, reading tombstones, but nothing came of it. Not to say there couldn't be something there, but I didn't find anything. Thought maybe "Flimsy" was like a cypher of sorts so I spent more time in crypt areas that I thought aligned with numbers matching alphabet letters (i.e F = 6, etc) going left to right, top to bottom, starting in the top left. Found nothing noteworthy. Not sure how the hammers and the crypt would correlate though, and feel that's a red herring in itself even if the hammers aren't. Nothing in-game points to the hammers having any relation to the crypt so if that's indeed the case and having to be told from outside the game that the solution is cryptic, that's a pretty bad puzzle lol.
Bamboo Creek really bothers me too. There's no area in the game that doesn't have a purpose, but here's a tiny area with one chest and a thing you can interact with? That being just a callback doesn't feel right.
I thought there being 4 hammers was significant in some way and started for hunting for things that came in fours. The biggest (and I think only) thing I found that stood out are the four statues in the middle of the ocean. But obviously no way to interact with them so that went nowhere.
I ran around the mines, revisited the glacier cliffs, went back to where we got the cobalt hammer upgrade, couldn't find anything. All the places where bells are met with nothing.
Maybe there's significance in how/where you get them and clues lie therein? Rainbow conch person, Garl's feast, the quizmaster, and catch all fish.
Like I said, I want to believe, but I'm running out of ideas lmao.
am I misremembering? you don't get a flimsy hammer from the conches. you get a rainbow star which just kinda flys away and does nothing.

WAIT. is it at all possible to get a flimsy hammer before you free the zephyr in the sky kingdom? the alchemist asks "do you have something like a simple tool or something" something like that and that causes you to present to him the coral hammer because thats the only hammer you have. I can't think of a way to get one before then if none of the flimsy hammers carry over in new game+

since your in ng+ what exactly does carry over? anything that could get you a hammer early? I edited my post again and I don't have the game at hand at the moment to check
Stats, gear, relics that you bought/earned (excluding ones you get through the story), all collected conches (all unique chests are replaced with an item called Alumni Token which is listed as a valuable to sell)
OH, the lakes are shown to be completed for fish caught. Okay so in theory you can get the plans for the fishing house on Mirth since you have all the conches, and all the fish caught should get you a hammer? And all of that can happen before the sky kingdom.

Go to the crypt, take the top center teleporter, and to your upper right will be a broken tombstone that's in line with the second brazier. You can push this tombstone with your wind. Make sure to have all 4 hammers before going
