Stuck at Watcher Island

Up till now everything's been quite easy, the game's been pretty linear, and I've had no problems.

Then I hit the one/three fight on Watcher Island and they're delete'ing my guys in a couple of turns. Is there something I'm missing? Are we not suppose to hit that island till a higher level or something? I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do...
