And since the combat of that was so slow, it seemed like it made everything else come slowly for the game overall.
Just my personal opinion.
If you like exploration in general for rpgs this game can scratch an itch, but if you like exploration with platform/puzzle type elements then it might even be better. But also keep in mind the platform puzzle elements may just be time wasters since its just walking around and pressing the button...
I'm personally only about 5+ hours in so hopefully the gameplay/puzzle/exploration gets more diverse...otherwise yeah this game is a beautiful 2d pixel art rpg, in the spiritual sense somewhat of chrono trigger, but its not fully there yet in my opinion.
The maps themselves in Sea of Stars have good mechanics to traverse through both the towns or dungeons. This makes getting through dungeons and finding treasure a better experience.
The battles on the other hand, I would give to Chained Echoes. The amount of skills you get is very limited in this game, so you don't really feel like you're making builds. The battle mechanics are still good however, as they still keep you engaged.
This makes the battles feel less casual and more action oriented.
The characters themselves feel kind of generic overall and equipment is just the next upgrade for most of the time. Also, the characters you unlock near the end are kind of, meh... Not a big fan of their designs. I like the first four though...
Then again, Chained echoes also had it's downsides with equipment and passives too. The one thing chained echoes did very well, was giving different skill sets to make characters feel more unique overall.
This game feels somewhat easier than Chained Echoes.
I enjoyed my play-through of Chained Echoes and I'm currently enjoying my play-through of Sea of Stars as well. I haven't gotten through the whole game yet, but the game is pretty good overall. I'm not sure ether games have decent replay value though...
They were going for the low level skills ala, super mario rpg, and chrono triggers of the world....strategy and combos at a qualitative amount vs quantitative. But i digress...
I try and finish most (j)rpgs I play, and I wasnt able to finish Chained Echoes yet...(going to go back to it...😏), but youre not the only person who praised it's skills(sets). I think that always makes us as the player feel like we are getting stronger...
On the flip side I also think fast combat when new simple mechanics are introduced also make us as the player feel like we're getting stronger. Maybe with twitch mechanics, or just recognizing the art tactics where we need to respond for strategy sakes...
Its amazing cause we get to take our time and strategize since its turn based vs our action rpg cousins. And so far Sea of Stars has the player doing that with Slash/blunt/?, boost, combo, heals, cooking, equipment, other nonsense, new characters, field actions (for puzzles), dont forget about the relics to make it harder/easier for the player...
I think as long as the gameplay is smooth and you have options, then most people shouldnt be complaining unless they've never played a 2d (j)rpg (with a bonus of amazing pixel art). just my opinon.
Until you get the green outfitted character, who can extend them somewhat. But they were never around when the first offenders of these things came up, which made me just ignore the thing entirely and just focus on damage and healing.
The game was too easy to even care about breaking the finishers anyways.
I don't really see any strategy which is a real shame. I'm only a few hours in so far.
