"Sophie's Choice" is the most distasteful achievement name I've seen.
Do the devs know what Sophie's Choice is about? A woman has to decide which of her children dies in a gas chamber and which lives on in a concentration camp. I'm all for dark humor, but this isn't even a joke. You get the achievement for making Sophie tell Bernard "You can't fire me because I quit!" What the ♥♥♥♥, devs? Change the name.

Lord, this is truly awful though they probably do not know the movie / book.

I'm only vaguely aware of it via cultural osmosis and even I knew the titular choice wasn't a liberating one. I didn't even know the specifics until I looked at the Wikipedia summary yesterday. The devs couldn't even be bothered to do a simple Google search.
I think most people know what it is, but I'd agree with you that it's not really a joke, just a reference. It's a reference a lot of people make lightly, like saying something is as bad as a million 9/11s. There must be a few baby-eating dingo achievement names out there, too.

The thing is, the two "choices" (I wouldn't consider telling your boss "You can't fire me because I quit!" to really be choice, but rather a childish comeback) are so far beyond comparable that it really just feels like the devs slapped the book title on the achievement without knowing anything about it. It reminds me of that "joke" Amy Shumer wasn't allowed to say at the Oscars: "Don't Look Up is the name of a movie. More like Don't Look Down the Barrel of Alec Baldwin's Shotgun." It's about as tasteful as the achievement name.

I would not think to much of if, since thankfully Sophie’s Choice is not based on a true story. But if it was it would really be highly inappropriate.

haven't you ever heard the phrase "This is a work of fiction. any similarities to persons living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental." ? Obviously not.

Ah, yes, because no Steam achievement has ever referenced another piece of media. And the devs definitely didn't change the achievement name after I pointed this out.

to be honest, didn't know about this, could be an innocent mistake

A lot of people don't actually know the meaning behind it and it's also commonly used in a jokey way. You can't exactly blame the devs or be pissed at them for simply not knowing or copying what others have been doing with the phrase. You, yourself, don't know everything and someone can be pissed at YOU for not knowing something.

Instead of being angry right off the bat, you can just educate the devs first and calmly point it out. Reserve the anger for them not doing anything about it.

I've never seen the name Sophie's Choice used in a "jokey way". Hell, I've rarely ever seen it referenced in the first place. Considering how the devs dropped the ball when it comes to making the gay characters look like anything but villains, it's clear they aren't fully capable of handling serious topics.

So just because you haven't it means it's never happened? Great mindset.

You provided no evidence of it being used in a "jokey" way. Glass houses, stones, yada yada.
The devs aren't strangers to literary references - hell, this entire story reads as a parallel to Murder on the Orient Express, the author of which, Agatha Christie, is directly mentioned by Andrew while you're waiting for the plaster key to harden.

And I'll say it again, just because you've never seen it, doesn't mean it never happened? I've seen it plenty enough times on places like Twitter or overhearing it from friends.

My main point was to not immediately be angry and to educate first. If you're immediately aggro when it comes to many things, I suggest doing some deep reflection, sis.

I get the feeling you're not familiar with the phrase "Those in glass houses shouldn't cast stones."
