Questions before I buy

I'm sure these questions have been asked many times before, and I'm sorry for that. Did some googling but got vague answers.

1. Can this game be played single player? Or would I struggle?
2. Do both players have to own the game? Or is there something akin to a friend pass that allows friends to play this with me, without them having to buy the game also?

you can play the game on the same equipment with two controllers.

1. you can play it alone but yeah it's harder (you have to switch between the birds to accomplish some tasks)
2. you can both own and play online together or you can remoteplay together over steam and couch coop is possible, too

i honestly play single player at times and it's still fun
