There are a few tips you should follow
1) Do not go into the Fog of War without recon, chances to be ambushed are high. Move slowly instead of rushing, unless your army is unmatched and you are moping up the enemy at the end of a scenario
2) Try to cumulate bonuses. Recon units provide damage bonus to surrounding friendlies.
3) Use the terrain at your advantage. Defend from rough terrain (forest, cities, rivers, hills). Avoid open terrain if possible.
4) Make sure your units can get supplies. If they can't repair / rearm, they will be utterly destroyed
5) Use artillery and their supportive fire. Make sure you have artillery right behind your first infantry line
6) Use tanks in open terrain, they have a lot of penalties if used in bad terrain (forest, cities...)
7) Destroy the enemy's supply sources (cities). Bomb them.
