The motivations in Infinite are actually simple but solid. Chief wants to fight the Banished and prevent them from repairing and using Zeta Halo, Escherum (spelling?) wants one final fight to prove his worth, The Harbinger wants to release her people, The Weapon wants to fulfill her programming but then develops her own personality, and Esparza just wants to make it home and survive, but then comes around to Chief's way of thinking and willingly helps the surviving members of the Infinity continue to fight against the Banished. It's nothing elaborate, but it is solid.
The Weapon is only six months old and would have spent most of that time in a handful of places. She's still naive and doesn't have the experiences Cortana had, so it's not right to think that she'd be as witty or quirky yet. Plus, she quickly develops an understandable desire to, you know, not die, only to accept that it was perhaps necessary if she was captured. I don't think that 60's sitcom woman is a fair treatment of her, considering that this is still a military sci-fi shooter, and that she is really just a collection of data given consciousness, despite having the personality of a naive freshman in college.
Jega is so bland I didn't mention him earlier. Point taken.
Esparza is the most human character we've seen in any of the Halo games so far. He's not even a soldier or even a pilot, so his lack of courage at first is understandable. He's no Johnson, but he's fine.
As for bringing in The Endless, that probably has to do with needing a secret on Zeta Halo without bringing in the M-rating The Flood would likely bring upon them. They seem to resemble Drones without being as annoying to hit. We'll have to see where this is going, but they're not as out of place as the Prometheans were, thank God.
To be fair, I'm also certain a number of unsympathetic places IRL had gift shops. Like 1930s Berlin.
