Id Tech instead of Unreal
What if the next Halo instead of using Unreal switched to Id Tech? Microsoft owns them, they could use that engine instead. Flexible, optimized FPS engine.

This video makes a good case for why Id tech could be a better path, that and as stated before, microsoft does own Id now so wouldn't cost them anything really.

Why specifically would that benefit Halo though? What aspects of that engine would be *particularly* great next to Unreal or Slipspace?

It's an engine made by one of Microsoft's own studios specifically for FPS games, also used by Machinegames. It'd be an awful shame if 343/Halo studios didn't use it, it means you could assign Id or Machinegames employees to work on Halo if need be.

And you gotta pay Epic to use it. You ain't gotta pay Id, not when you own the best software engineers in the business.

Unreal fees are pretty cheap, only $1,850 per user per year
ZodiacThundaga Oct 10, 2024 @ 1:19pm
Jesus. Can't imagine it'll stay that way when everybody wants to use Unreal. You could save 1,850 using one of your own engines. Frankly, I think Unreal could use a bit of competition with Id Tech once more.

you know, it's funny you mention this.

there was once a first person shooter for the PC released in 1998 that had revolutionary new technology (at the time) for 3d graphics and rendering.

it's forgotten these days, but.. i think the game (and by extension, the engine) was called "Unreal".

I dunno if that technology is even still around, though.

Too late, they are trying to cover up their bs with the "pretty graphics" of Unreal Engine. Go watch their video again - it's telling how often they mention "how it looks".

It's wild how mismanaged this franchise is.

gear of war is made with unreal and it works phenomenally. theres a good chance they get a big company discount as well lol

Gears can run in Unreal all it wants, doesn't mean I want Halo to be in the same engine as it.

Stutter Engine 5

Can't wait for the new Halo to run like hot ass.

Bit late for that
Dankalicious Oct 11, 2024 @ 1:54pm
Yea for PC its going to be terribly optimized garbage. I can't name one UE5 game that doesn't stutter and run like ass on PC. Id software has mastered optimization and gameplay mechanics, honestly they should have tasked Id software with this project, but nope we just get halo studios, a rebranding of yet again an under qualified team is going to ruin halo once again.
ZodiacThundaga Oct 11, 2024 @ 8:35pm
If they're under qualified, maybe they could make something else before trying Halo again.
