Do I need an Xbox Live account to play?

An Xbox account is required to play, yes.
This is the same as a Microsoft account, but the Xbox side of the account gets to have its own username.
And you don't need any kind of Xbox Live gold or Gamepass subscription, multiplayer is free on PC Xbox games.

Also, if happens you got an Hotmail e-mail or one you use for Windows... you can use it for Xbox account. I got mine since back old Windows Live Messenger days and use that account and e-mail every since.

The funniest thing is that this game installed an anti-cheat, threw its files into the system, then asked for an XBOX account, I entered this account and OH MIRACLE! After I entered my account, it simply does not let me onto the server, you sit and stare at a blank screen! Rare garbage, I had to delete it right away...
