I don't believe the purse sizes increase from season to season, but as you get more competitive you'll be able to sign with better sponsors and complete harder incentive contracts. Sponsors are where the real money is (not too dissimilar to real life, I think :) )
Also, keep in mind that the goal isn't to fully upgrade your car, but to win championships. Getting fully upgraded can be a nice secondary goal once you have won, to give motivation to keep playing, though.
Anyhows, the first glitch in the game. If you drop down from 410 class to midgets then on completion of the Midget season one of two things will happen.
1) If you lose the Midget season and set the next career season to either of the other two classes (using the skip/participate sliders) then the you cannot progress past the preparation screen. The game locks and requires a full restart. Returning to Midget class is the only working option.
2) If you win the season then you can only participate in Midget or 305 class, with the latter requiring a team purchase to continue. Selecting 410 once again locks the game, requiring a full restart. Purchasing the new team (as requested) doesn't reset any upgrades you have already added to the vehicle so that's a relief :)
