Best weapon for short range and long range?

IMHO M4 is the most all-around.

I don't think it's the best, though. If there exist one single best weapon that makes all other weapons trash, then the game design has a big problem.

1911 is one of the best secondaries, M4 and Mk18 are good and if you know your gonna be close range then pick up a shotgun or Mp5

For longer ranges, braced M249, and marksman rifles tend to be best, The M16A4 is pretty solid at mid-range to long range as an in-between of the M4 and the marksman rifles.

Close range I'd take either the shorty MK17 or MK18 but you could also use the MP5, just don't use it on armored targets.

CIA get the MP7 which I would imagine as pretty good at close range gunfighting.

the XM1014 is pretty violent at anything below 10m, but it's long which makes it very poor for tight corridors. And it takes ages to reload and it's very low capacity.

The M4A1 on the other hand is always a safe jack of all trades master of none, but it does tend to be a bit tough to get around tight spaces with the 14.5 inch barrel to worry about

I did some testing on a custom map some time ago. Here are my weapons of choice:

<5m: the 1911 pistol (beats any SMG or the shotgun by far!)
5-20m: the suppressed M4 with holo-sight
>20m: the suppressed M110 DMR with 3.5-10x optics
>20m, stationary position behind a cover: the Mk48 LMG with 6x optics. Big spawns of enemies can be stunned by a grenadier.
Silent weapons: the MP5SD6 or Vintorez

For the militia, the HS-45 pistol is overpowered at CQC. The RPK is pretty good behind a cover. The FAL is not too terrible everywhere else.

I never use any other firearms.

shotgun is the only weapon in the game that has a very low reset time allowing it to fire extremely quickly between kills. it loses a lot of its rate of fire at 8 meter or longer range. nothing beats this vs large number of enemies standing in a straight line

dont use mk18 without its special ammo, it makes a massive difference in this gun

every long rifle with a big scope does well at long range. the shorty mk17 is suprisingly
effective up to like 40 meters due to having high crit chance even at long range if you put a big scope on it.

mk48 is accurate and hits hard while also being a machinegun, use it on the largest maps when you need to cover wide open outdoor areas vs large groups of enemies

the apc9 is strong at every range up to like 18 meters due to extremely high rate of fire and being allowed to dump entire 30 round mags in one burst if it needs it. with the smg ease of handling this weapon is pretty braindead to use and very little care needs to be taken with positioning other than timing reloads

I find some of the weapons quite counter intuitive. Against armoured targets at close range, the mp5 seems much much better than something like an ak74u which surprised me. A lot of performance comes from which fire mode is used at what range, which is only visible in the config file.
.45 side arms are incredibly good for CQB since they are always (?) a one shot kill and they fire very quickly.
