They use a AI to detect what is and isn't classified as inappropriate. Is it a good bot? No but it was made for them to forget about this game.
The thing is that the e-mail that was sent to me directly states that the hammer and sickle is an offensive and inappropriate symbol that is worthy of a ban.
Look, I ain't gonna tell John EA how to run his business however the playerbase needs to know. A lot of people use 20th century political symbols in the game as a form of RP or meme or whatever, obviously, it is a world war 1 game (that INCLUDES communists as a playable faction) and it invites such behavior.
Now if some kid gets mad at dying constantly they technically have the option to get someone banned over this very innocent behavior. I bet this is what happened to me. It is messed up and people should be aware.
Its a flawed system, I agree however even with the setting of the game EA still has to uphold their super unrealistic and unmeasured rules with emblems. Regardless of how dumb the rule may be in this particular case.
Should it be banned? Yes; but I think differently than others. Does the setting allow for this to be allowed? Maybe; but EA doesn't define these lines UNTIL they are crossed which is honestly a dumb way to do things.
Honestly it feels like EA wants to stay one step ahead of what is considered offensive by pop-culture which is why we are not given specifics, it needs to post-hoc rationalize banning people.
I can prove EA does not believe the hammer and sickle is inappropriate. They literally made Red Alert 3 and even created a custom EA logo with the symbol in question that pops up when you enter the game. https://youtu.be/ssDK0C-LP4Q
Hitler was a socialist
Not a thread about politics
I have no idea what that means for real
It released in 2008, back then nobody cared about these political images being in video games because people weren't snowflakes like they are now.
Now; you have to cater to these people or else the media will boycott you to death. There is no downside for EA to prohibit people from using them. A: They don't get canceled by the general population with the poor reasoning of "EA supports Russia" or something dumb like that. And B: They remain neutral and can just avoid controversy about it in general
You are just wrong on so many levels, but keep romanticizing communism mate.
I couldn't have said it better. I remember playing World At War as a teen. The game pulled no punches nor did it try to whitewash history. Most games back in the day were like that. World At War would have never been made today, at least without it being seriously castrated from anything that gives it an edge.
The whole triple AAA gaming scene feels like a weird display of Twitter Activists informing Journalists about what is appropriate, then journalists inform the general public and then any games that are not fitting this extremely narrow moralistic view of what is appropriate suffer for it.
