can i repair vehicles while inside??

i have the repair tool on and i press and hold x like im supposed to but it doesnt repair the vehicle. am i doing something wrong i dont get it

if u driving the vehicle, u can repair the vehicle by yes pressing x and ull see wrench icon inside a circle and hear it clicks. yes also, even smallest hit when reparing itll stop. but if u OUTSIde the vehicle, u need repair tool in hand, get near vehicle anddddd use left click in mouse
