Poisons and mage staff?

Do poisons, such as crow venom and debilitating work with mage staffs, since staffs don't actually directly hit the target?

I usually play on normal. I have never used poisons and venoms. To me it always seemed and still does as an unnecessary expense. I go with proper level up build currently: attributes, skill, telents, and this guide. https://gamestegy.com/dragon-age-2/builds

I played this when it first came out. 2011? on CD-ROM/DVD-ROM. This guide was not out then and still beat the game. The build guide is amazing for playing on higher than normal.

If you have the DLC, you get amazing staffs that don't need buffs:)
