As far as this game goes, the only time I had a problem was first launching the game. I think I just opened EA Origin manually and then tried to start it through Steam. Ever since then I've had no problem just starting through Steam without having to open Origin manually.
I ended up getting the game to work by doing what Whitey suggested above and launching EA Origin first. (No, don't use the "thin launch" EA Origin that auto-initializes when you click Play in Steam, close that and launch the full EA Origin from within Windows then click the play button in that). Afterwards it sent me an error message in EA Origin that my game was not synched correctly. I clicked "Play Anyway"/whatever and the game launched normally. I have disabled the dev console in the Steam Launch options, but this didn't fix anything as far as I can tell.
What I think went wrong is that EA Origin had some issue shutting down last night. I ended up having to force close it before I could shutdown Windows after several attempts. That would make sense with the EA Origin error message I got. I also noticed that Steam re-downloaded their version of EA Origin "thin-launch" after I did a file-verification.
It is launching now, and fingers crossed that nothing major has been broken. I feel your pain on DAO. I have never sworn that much over anything, and I was in the Marines. We've raised cussing to an art form. I'll swear DAO keeps track of when you last saved and always manages to maliciously pick the exact worst possible time to drop you back to the desktop. I suspect I'll be babying EA Origins tonight, making absolutely sure it shuts down successfully before the computer shutdown.
Uninstalling then re-installing origin itself seems to have fixed the problem though, launches fine now and I didn't have to re-download the game. Could be worth a try.
So if you're using afterburner, try turning it off and then start the game.
Here's the little trick that worked for me just barely:
1. Click the "Play" button in Steam, Origin launches but DA2 never initializes.
2. As I'm about to use my previous workaround, I realize that Origin keeps online save data for DA2 and has been horrible at synching it lately.
3. As a shot in the dark, I go into Origin's settings and "Go Offline".
4. DA2's stalled process immediately launches for me.
5. I navigate up to the loading menu in DA2 and then change the Origin settings back to "Online".
6. So far everything works again.
7. Fingers crossed that cloud saves within Origin are also working. (I'm not especially confident that they are).
EA's reportedly moving from the Origin platform to a new hub program. I'm almost positive they're having issues keeping old game data up to date on the servers with all the migrations they're going to be doing. This is probably one of those issues. I'm still convinced the "Steam wasn't broke in the first place, there was no need to fix it" argument is the correct one.
I had to install all the Visuall C ++ Runtimes. Steam failed to start the origins client installation. Installing Runtimes solved everything.
