ETA: Wouldn't be usable anyway, they don't actually give you a place to enter it in.
Apparently buying the game from EA doesn't give you this problem with the product key.
VPN solution unfortunately didn't work. My best guess is it having something to do with me2 edition (all DLC) appearing in my library, since then me3 hasn't worked. Either way it doesn't look like I'll be playing me3 for a while. Thanks for the suggestion tho.

This solved my key problem, game lauches just fine now! Try it.
Contacted the support desk, who came back with: 'our development team is aware of the issue and are working on a solution as we speak'.
Hopefully that wasn't just help-desk-speak to get rid of me and they actually will soon come with a patch that solves this infuriating issue.
