That's pretty defensive, but i know what you mean.
Only solution i know of is to use 1.13, but afair it needs the original JA2 first and a modded version of UB on top of it.
My thought is just to build a windows 98 or xp rig. Old parts.

What did you do to make it run with Stracciatella at all? I just tried it and got the following dialogue on title screen of game:
Runtime Error
Press <ESC> To Exit
Number of tilesets in code does not match data file
