You don't need Northstar to play the multiplayer currently
You may not "need" it but it's the best way to play the multiplayer without any issues. It also adds some custom game modes that are pretty cool.
As for answering, that just the thing with a browser based server system. There is no matchmaking server to yeet you into one of the severs. Progression in this system would also be damn hard to curate, you could just edit your own save data to unlock everything, so they unlocked everything for you
As for the lack of comraderie(?) thats on you. Strike up a conversation or encourage everyone to go kraber only. We're here to have fun after all.
